About this qualification

The IIE Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering programme, available at Emeris, is accredited by the CHE/HEQC and the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA). The Engineering Council of South Africa is the only signatory in Africa to the Washington Accord, therefore allowing for global recognition.

The shortage of skilled mechanical engineers has a widespread effect on South Africa and the African continent at large, affecting the country’s functioning in the globalised business environment and economy. Upon graduating with this degree, your skills will be in high demand, making you sought after by potential employers.

You will be well-prepared to enter the industry upon graduating. Unlike traditional engineering programmes, the Bachelor of Engineering programme will expose you to the role of engineering in the real world as early as the first year of the programme. Our programme ensures that you are equipped with first-hand experience of the value that engineering adds to improving the quality of lives in communities.

This mechanical engineering qualification will provide you with the basic skills, knowledge and insights to reach a deeper understanding of managing the built environment, through the application of the principles learnt throughout the programme.

The mechanical engineering degree programme is offered in two streams: namely the four-year mainstream programme and the five-year extended programme. The purpose of the extended programme is to offer students the opportunity to complete the first two years of the mainstream programme over a period of three years.

Admission requirements

Minimum Admission Requirements:
  • National Senior Certificate (NSC): Higher Certificate pass with English at 50%, Maths at 70%, and Physical Science at 60%.
  • National Certificate (Vocational) [NC(V)]: Higher Certificate pass with English at 50%, Maths at 70%, and Physical Science at 60%.
  • Senior Certificate (SC): Endorsement required with English at 50%, Maths at 70%, and Physical Science at 60%.
  • Senior Certificate (Amended) [SC(a)]: Bachelor pass with English at 50%, Maths at 70%, and Physical Science at 60%.
  • International Applicants: USAf Exemption Certificate with 50% or equivalent for English AND 70% or equivalent for Maths AND 60% or equivalent is also required for either Physical Science or both Physics and Chemistry.

Career opportunities

  • Maintenance Engineer: Management and maintenance on machinery in manufacturing, mining, and industry plants to enhance and sustain operations.
  • Design Engineer: Individual or part of design teams using engineering tools and software to generate prototypes for a broad range of engineering industries.
  • Process / Production Engineer: Responsible for optimising manufacturing or processing operations by balancing costs and quality.
  • Quality Control / Testing Engineer: Responsible for performing tests, conduct analyses and documentation to ensure industry compliance and quality.
  • Field Service Engineer: Installs and maintains industrial equipment on-site.
  • Project Engineer: Oversees engineering projects, coordinating design, budget, and deliverables.
  • R&D Engineer: Conducts experiments and develops prototypes for clients.
