Senate Discretionary Admissions

Higher Certificates

Candidates must have attempted the Senior Certificate or equivalent, attained the age of 23 before or during the first year of registration with three years’ work experience and proven ability relating to the proposed programme as well as adequate communication skills.

Candidates must have attained the age of 45 before or during the first year of registration.

Where candidates do not satisfy the formal admission requirements for this qualification, The IIE may consider an admission application in terms of the Qualification Completion, Credit Accumulation and Transfer, Articulation and Recognition of Prior Learning Policy (IIE010).

A USA qualification developed by the American Council on Education (ACE)
Candidates with a GED qualification may be admitted if they have a SAQA Certificate of Evaluation with NQF L4 equivalence, as well as a minimum score of 145 out of 200 for all 4 GED subjects.

*Requirements for the Higher Certificate in Legal Studies & Higher Certificate in Early Childhood Care and Education

Candidates with a GED qualification may be admitted if they have a SAQA Evaluation Certificate with NSC L4 equivalence, a minimum score of 165 out of 200 for Reasoning through Language Arts and a minimum of 145 out of 200 for each of the other GED subjects (Mathematical Reasoning, Social Studies and Science).

Candidates with an OQSF Level 4 120-credit cognate qualification may be admitted once assessed and approved by the relevant Head of Faculty.

Candidates must have achieved Higher Certificate pass and meet the additional admission criteria (where applicable).
A SAQA Certificate of Evaluation with NQF L4 equivalence is required.

Candidates who have not yet obtained their SAQA Certificate of Evaluation for the school-leaving qualification but who have a USAf Exemption Certificate with at least 30% or equivalent for English and meeting the additional admission requirements for a specific programme, may be considered for admission. These cases must be escalated to the Office of the Registrar (OoR) for approval.

*Requirements for the Higher Certificate in Legal Studies & Higher Certificate in Early Childhood Care and Education 

Candidates who have not yet obtained their SAQA Certificate of Evaluation for the school-leaving qualification but who have a USAf Exemption Certificate with at least 40% or equivalent for English and meeting the additional admission requirements for a specific programme, may be considered for admission. These cases must be escalated to the Office of the Registrar for approval.

Undergraduate Degrees

Candidates 23 years and older at point of registration, with an endorsed Senior Certificate or a National Senior Certificate with Bachelor’s Degree pass or National Certificate (Vocational) with Bachelor’s degree Pass or Senior Certificate (amended) with Bachelor’s Degree pass can be accepted on a senate discretionary mature age admission if they do not meet the additional admission requirements. Their academic progress will be tracked and reported at Senate. A USAf Exemption Certificate is not required.

Candidates having attained the age of 23 before or during the first year of registration with a Senior Certificate, with a minimum of 40% in at least four higher or standard grade subjects at least three of which shall have been passed simultaneously and one of which shall be a recognised higher-grade subject.
A USAf Exemption Certificate is required.

Candidates having attained the age of 23 before or during the first year of registration with a Senior Certificate (Amended), National Senior Certificate or National Senior Certificate (Vocational) with a minimum of 40% in at least four higher or standard grade or 20-credit subjects (or equivalent), at least three of which shall have been passed simultaneously and in the case of a Senior Certificate (Amended), at least one of which shall be a recognised higher grade subject.
A Diploma Pass on these certificates would imply that that the candidate qualifies.

Senate Discretionary Admission - Mature Age NSC/NC(V)/SC(a) Hold must be selected so that the USAf Exemption Certificate may be applied for by the Office of the Registrar.

Candidates must have attained the age of 45 before or during the first year of registration. 

A USAf Exemption Certificate is required.

Where candidates do not satisfy the formal admission requirements for this qualification, The IIE may consider an admission application in terms of the Qualification Completion, Credit Accumulation and Transfer, Articulation and Recognition of Prior Learning Policy (IIE010).

Candidates who have completed an USAf approved cognate foundation programme from a registered and accredited provider may be admitted. 
An USAf Exemption Certificate is required - the Office of the Registrar will facilitate, on behalf of the student, an application for degree admission to USAf, once the student has provided proof of payment to USAf.

Candidates who have successfully completed at least 120 credits on the first year of a cognate degree may be admitted.  However, if a student completed less than 120 credits, the admission criteria on the NSC or equivalent apply.  

Candidates with an OQSF Level 5 cognate qualification may be admitted, provided the OQSF qualification has at least 120 credits at NQF Level 5. An USAf Exemption Certificate is required - the Office of the Registrar will facilitate, on behalf of the student, an application for degree admission to USAf, once the student has provided proof of payment to USAf.

Candidates who have one module outstanding to complete an IIE Higher Certificate which is appropriate for admission to a degree, may register for the degree on the condition that they will register for the outstanding Higher Certificate module along with the first year of the degree.
If a student does not pass the module, they will be allowed to register again* for this module and any modules failed in the first year of the degree; however, they will NOT be allowed to register for the second year of the Degree, or any subsequent year, until they have passed the Higher Certificate module. *Registration is also subject to the maximum completion times rule in IIE010.

Candidates must have achieved Bachelor's Degree pass and meet the additional admission criteria (where applicable).
The Office of the Registrar will apply to USAf for Exemption based on Senate Discretion.

Candidates must present an American High School Diploma transcript which demonstrates:

  1. A GPA of at least 3.5
    AND
  2. SAT scores of a minimum of 610 for English and 530 for Mathematics, OR Advanced Placement scores (at least two subjects passed on grade 3, 4 or 5 for the Advanced Placement (AP) examinations of the American College Board OR
    ACT mean of 22 with a 22 sub-minimum in English and 21 in Mathematics, OR
    National Benchmark Test with the following scores, “proficient scores" i.e., 71 for Academic Literacy (AL) & 70 for Quantitative Literacy (subject to updates on the NBT website)
  3. Meet any additional admissions requirements.

The Office of the Registrar will apply to USAf for Exemption based on Senate Discretion.

Students who have completed the US High School Diploma outside of South Africa would still be required
to apply directly to USAf’s Matriculation Board for Exemption, should they wish to be registered for a
degree.

Advanced Diploma

Where candidates do not satisfy the formal admission requirements for this qualification, The IIE may consider an admission application in terms of the Qualification Completion, Credit Accumulation and Transfer, Articulation and Recognition of Prior Learning Policy (IIE010).

Post Graduate Qualifications (Honours, Masters and Doctoral Qualifications)

Where candidates do not satisfy the formal admission requirements for this qualification, The IIE may consider an admission application in terms of the Qualification Completion, Credit Accumulation and Transfer, Articulation and Recognition of Prior Learning Policy (IIE010).

If applicant does not meet minimum admission requirements and there is no alternative (such as completion of NQP modules) but they have relevant experience, the following must be requested:

  1. Certificates for all formal (Accredited Higher Education qualifications) and/or informal qualifications/modules (SLP’s, Microcredentials etc). SAQA certificates must be provided for any international qualifications.
  2. CV to determine whether the following are related to the qualification that the applicant is applying for:
    • Formal (Accredited Higher Education qualifications) and/or informal qualifications/modules (SLP’s, Microcredentials etc).
    • Relevant work experience.
