Emeris Initiative Transforms Wynberg Children's Court Waiting Room Into A Welcoming Space

Children and families visiting the Wynberg Children's Court are now welcomed by a brighter, more comforting space, due to a collaborative initiative led by the Emeris Newlands Cape Town Community Law Clinic.

Over a period of two days, the campus’ Community Law Clinic partnered with the campus’ Student Experience, its Emeris Cares committee, its Faculty of Law and The Vega School at Emeris Newlands Cape Town to revamp the Children’s Court's waiting room. The initiative resulted in a space that reflects care, dignity and hope for children facing challenging family circumstances. The now colourful, child-friendly space is designed to help ease anxiety and to provide the children and their families with a more welcoming environment while they await court proceedings.

The Children's Court hears matters that involve the care and protection of children, child custody, guardianship and other sensitive family related matters. Recognising that court proceedings can be overwhelming for young children, the team set out to create a space that offers comfort and reassurance during what is often an emotionally challenging period.

The revamp was made possible through the generosity of donations, the creativity of The Vega School at Emeris Newlands Cape Town students who designed and painted a vibrant mural and the dedication of student and staff volunteers who spent countless hours cleaning, painting and refurbishing.

"This initiative demonstrates what is possible when students and staff come together with a shared purpose," said Ayant Jagaan (Attorney Emeris Community Law Clinic). "While we cannot change the circumstances that bring the children to court, we can help create an environment where they feel safe, respected and cared for”.

"Children who come through the Children's Court are often experiencing some of the most difficult moments in their lives. This revamped waiting room creates a warmer, more welcoming environment where children and their families can feel a little more at ease.” said a Wynberg Children's Court representative. “We are grateful and appreciative to everyone at Emeris who contributed their time, skills and generosity to make this possible”.

The revamped waiting room is a reminder of the positive impact that can be achieved when institutions, students and community partners work together to support those who need it most.
