Emeris Students Inspire Hope Through Mentorship Partnership With The GEM Project

For the second consecutive year, the Emeris Nelson Mandela Bay campus recently opened its doors to learners from The GEM Project, continuing a partnership which is helping to shape brighter futures through education, mentorship and meaningful human connection. The partnership highlights the impact of collaboration in creating meaningful opportunities for young people.

Over the course of a week, Grade 6 to 11 learners from various schools in the Northern areas of Gqeberha were paired with Faculty of Commerce student mentors based on the subjects they needed the most support with. Together, they worked through academic challenges, built confidence and formed relationships that extended beyond the classroom.

The week ended with a celebration filled with games, dance classes and shared laughter which gave the learners the opportunity to simply enjoy being children while celebrating everything they had achieved thus far.

"Hosting The GEM Project on campus was an incredibly special and memorable experience. Watching the learners grow in confidence as they grasped new concepts was rewarding but seeing our student tutors grow as mentors was equally inspiring”, said Chloé Critchlow, IIE Faculty of Commerce representative and third-year IIE Bachelor of Commerce (specialising in Finance and Accounting) student at Emeris Nelson Mandela Bay. “We built meaningful relationships throughout the week, and it was an honour to work alongside Emeris in making the initiative a success”.

The GEM Project is a child and youth development organisation based in Nelson Mandela Bay which provides safe, nurturing spaces where vulnerable children and young people can learn, grow and thrive. Through academic support, nutritious meals and life-skills development. The organisation works to restore dignity, build hope and create opportunities for children from vulnerable communities.

"From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with warmth, kindness and professionalism. We experienced firsthand that teamwork truly makes the dream work.” said Alricko Hart (The GEM Project representative). “Seeing the Emeris Nelson Mandela Bay students willingly invest their time and hearts in our learners was inspiring. It was more than just a visit, it was an experience that gave our children hope and reminded them that they are seen, valued and supported. We are deeply grateful to the campus for walking this journey with us”.

Portia Webb (Head of Faculty of Commerce Emeris Nelson Mandela Bay) said the initiative reflected the power of education in changing lives. "The GEM Project was about more than tutoring. It brought together students, staff and learners with one shared purpose. Seeing the learners’ enthusiasm and the commitment of everyone involved was inspiring and showed what can be achieved when a community comes together”.

Emeris Nelson Mandela Bay and The GEM Project are committed to nurturing young minds, building confidence and planting seeds of possibility that will continue to bear fruit for many years to come.
