Emeris Student Marko Ferreira Wins Bronze At World Athletics U20 Championships

Emeris Nelson Mandela Bay first year IIE Bachelor of Education in Intermediate Phase Teaching student and sprinter Marko Ferreira made his mark on the world stage when he won a bronze medal in the men’s 100m at the recent World Athletics U20 Championships held in Eugene Oregon, USA. He clocked 10.16 seconds in the final to secure third place and finish as the third fastest U20 athlete in the world in the 100m. American Tate Taylor claimed gold in 9.94 seconds, while Jamaica's Gary Card took silver in 10.05 seconds.

His journey to the podium was impressive from the get-go. He won his opening race in 10.11 seconds, before running 10.13 seconds in the semi-final to, as the second fastest athlete, qualify for the final.

Going into the final with a medal firmly within reach, Ferreira delivered another strong performance to secure his place on the podium alongside some of the world's fastest young sprinters.

Reflecting on his performance, Ferreira said the result was a proud moment after years of hard work and preparation with his coach.

“The race wasn't anything I could have imagined, but it was the best I could execute on the night. I always dreamed of winning but having the medal around my neck now… I feel so accomplished. It's what my coach and I have been training for the whole time so I'm super happy with it”, he said.

“I’m super proud of Marko for being able to hold his composure and to show such resilience under pressure. Competing at this level is not as easy as it may seem, but he executed the plan when it mattered most”, said Jessi Khan (Coach and owner of Heat Athletics Club, Gqeberha). “Taking third in the world against an elite field validates all the hard work, and it sets a strong foundation for what’s to come”.

For Marko, the experience in Eugene is one he will carry with him as he continues to grow both on and off the track. With the support of his coach, his family and those who have followed his journey, this could be the beginning of an exciting next chapter for the young sprinter.
