Development Studies examines development throughout the world, with its focus on developing nations. Development Studies aims to tackle some of the challenges faced by the developing world and to establish strategies to help alleviate poverty.
It is an important area of study because it looks at inequality in the world and endeavours to find solutions to improve the lives of citizens in developing countries. Getting to grips with development studies requires delving into many other disciplines including political science, economics, sociology, psychology, communication, health sciences, anthropology, geography, history, and resource and environmental science.
Development Studies is an interdisciplinary programme of study. Development Studies is concerned with expanding capabilities and opportunities for all individuals, families, communities, countries and the world at large to live free lives and to pursue choices that they value. It focuses on the role and form of markets, states and civil society, the reduction of poverty and the progress of human wellbeing.
While Development Studies is grounded in Social Sciences, its impact and application extend to technical fields such as Agriculture, Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs), Water Management, Engineering, Medicine, Business, Forestry, Climate Change, and Mining, among many others. By studying Development Studies, your expertise will be required in, among other fields, public service, private practice and non-profit organisations involved in social, economic and political change and reform, empowerment, gender mainstreaming, the redress of poverty and development communication. You will be able to design, plan, implement, monitor and evaluate development projects and programmes at local, regional, national and international levels.
