Biography
Vanessa is a lecturer at Emeris with an interest in the interface between people and the environment. She lecturers in the Postgraduate Diploma in Water Management and also acts as a supervisor for Masters of Philosophy in Integrated Water Management.
She has a MSc. in Animal, Plant and Environmental Science from the University of the Witwatersrand with her research focusing on the trade in commonly used medicinal bulb species in South Africa. As part of this she contributed to Red Data lists for some of these species which honed her interest in how research can be applied to national, regional and international conservation efforts.
She is passionate about Citizen Science and her research on the topic is interested in how Citizen Science can be used as an educational tool as well as one for, community engagement, advocacy and action. This passion has led her to co-launch the Citizen Science for Southern Africa Association with colleagues. Her other research interest relate to sustainable resource use, traditional medicinal plant use, water management and social-ecological systems. She is also a registered Environmental Assessment Practitioner and registered Professional Natural Scientist.
