Biography
Shaylen Naidoo is a lecturer in the Faculty of Education, focusing on social sciences and geography education. He was honoured with the prestigious Archbishop Denis Hurley Scholarship during his postgraduate studies at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), where he also received multiple Dean's Commendations for academic excellence. Shaylen brings substantial practical experience to his role, having taught secondary school Geography at four large institutions across both the private and public sectors in South Africa. This experience spans diverse socio-economic contexts, providing him with a nuanced understanding of the national educational landscape. He has further contributed to the educational system as a marker for both the public National Senior Certificate (NSC) and the Independent Examinations Board (IEB) Grade 12 examinations. His professional service also includes a tenure as a SADTU site steward. His research interests focus on education for climate change, curriculum design, and the development of inclusive pedagogies within the South African context. He has disseminated his findings through presentations at both national and international education conferences. Shaylen is an active member of the scholarly community, holding memberships with the Southern African Geography Teachers Association and the American Association of Geographers.
