Biography

Lizette Carstens started her career designing voter education material for the IEC for South Africa's first democratic elections. She later joined a subsidiary of QData as a digital designer responsible for developing interactive training material and maintaining the company’s website and in 2002, founded her own design studio. Her academic career started as a part-time lecturer while completing her Masters degree in Information Design at the University of Pretoria. She joined the Independent Institute of Education's (IIE) as part-time lecturer and Honours supervisor in 2014, before moving to a full-time position as National Programme Manager For Creative Brand Communication and Gamification. Lizette is a member of the Golden Key Society and has published on the use of co-design approaches in SME and educational contexts. She is currently Deputy Dean of Design, managing the design unit at The IIE Emeris (Vega School) and pursuing a Doctoral degree in Innovation and Technology Management, focussing on the use of design thinking approaches to support innovation capacity in South African SMMEs.
