About this qualification

Each organisation needs competent finance professionals to assist with internal decision- making and control, as well as external financial reporting. This skill shortage in the national and international finance profession is widely publicised.

The IIE Postgraduate Diploma in Finance and Accounting will equip students to render professional financial and accounting services to various role players, including private and public companies, governmental and non- governmental organisations, and professional service firms.

Admission requirements

Minimum Admission Requirements

  • An appropriate HEQSF Level 7 Bachelor’s degree; OR
  • An appropriate Advanced Diploma; OR
  • An equivalent NQF Level 7 qualification with Accounting at third year level OR
  • Financial Management at third year level AND Accounting at second year level.
  • For International students, A SAQA Evaluation Certificate with NQF L7 equivalence in an appropriate field with Accounting at third year level.

Curriculum

Year 1

  • IPCO8111 – Internal Planning and Control
    This module covers the importance of costs and the drivers of costs in the production, analysis and use of information for decision making and is focused on the short term and covers budgeting as a means of short-term planning to execute the organizational strategy.
  • PBMG8111 – Business Performance Management
    This module lays the groundwork for understanding how modern organisations operate within the contemporary business landscape. It advocates for an integrated approach to organizational management, considering both external and internal viewpoints.
  • RIMA8112 – Risk Management
    Risk Management focuses on the identification, analysis, evaluation and management of various risks which could adversely affect the implementation of the organizational strategy.
  • BSTR8112 – Business Strategy 
    The business strategy module studies the effective implementation of organisational strategies by aligning structures, people, process, projects and relationships. It aims to develop the skills and abilities of the strategic leaders of organisations enabling them to create the vision and direction for the growth and long-term sustainable success.

Year 2

  • MANA8111 – Management Accounting
    This module is core to the Postgraduate Diploma in Finance and Accounting. It deals with critical skills required by finance professionals – decision making aimed at competitive advantage; instituting appropriate performance measures; project appraisal; and dealing with risk. These skills impact the long-term sustainability of the organisation.
  • FREB8111 – Financial Reporting 
    This module forms part of the Postgraduate Diploma in Finance and Accounting when specialising in management accounting and/or financial management. Finance professionals need a thorough grounding of financial reporting principles, as they are often required to report externally. This module deals with consolidated financial statements; and requirements in terms of International Financial Reporting Standards.
  • CASM8112 – Case Study Methodology 
    This module is fundamental to the Postgraduate Diploma in Finance and Accounting since finance professionals have to compile business reports on a daily basis. These entail analysis of information, often in a format similar to the information contained in the real-life case studies, in the work environment. This module deals with the identification of relevant information, analysis of said information, and making recommendations in the form of a report.
  • FIST8112 – Financial Strategy 
    This module is core to the Postgraduate Diploma in Finance and Accounting. It prepares finance professionals for strategic financial decisions intrinsically part of managerial positions. The module also deals with policy decisions; and financing requirements of organisations, acquisitions and mergers.

The IIE Postgraduate Diploma in Finance and Accounting is accredited by the Higher Education Quality Council (HEQC) of the Council on Higher Education (CHE) and is registered by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) as a 120-credit qualification on level 8 (SAQA ID: 102208).

On-Campus written examination venue information

An alternative examination centre is only permissible for students studying abroad and those located in a province of South Africa where there is no Emeris campus. If there is no Emeris campus within reach, an alternative venue will need to be sourced by you. For non-Emeris venues, there is an alternative venue levy per module.

Device and connectivity specifications required for online study

  • Reliable internet connection (we recommend 5-10 GB of data per month and an internet speed of at least 0.15 Mbps).
  • Desktop PC or laptop with at least an i3 processor and 4GB RAM memory.
  • Windows 8 or macOS 10.15 (Microsoft Office 365 is available as a free download for Emeris students), and Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge Chromium or Firefox.
  • A working webcam and microphone.
  • An uninterrupted power supply is also highly recommended. Exams are written at an exam centre and in some instances online. These details will be specified in your programme assessment schedule.
