About this qualification

The IIE Master of Strategic Information and Communication Technology Management, available at Emeris, will advance and deepen students’ specialist knowledge of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) with strong focus on strategic management. Students will be able to demonstrate advanced competencies and skills to design and manage competitive ICT solutions and strategies within organisations. The Master’s graduate will have the ability to conduct a contextual analysis of strategy and manage the responsive development of secure ICT strategies, processes, and projects to enable achievement of strategic imperatives; improve and embed ICT competence to use and deploy the data and knowledge; design and drive governance and security frameworks; strategically manage and develop appropriate human capital to deliver on the ICT strategic imperatives.

Admission requirements

Minimum Admission Requirements

  • An appropriate HEQSF Level 8 Honours degree; OR
  • A relevant Postgraduate Diploma or appropriate equivalent; OR
  •  An appropriate Level 8 Bachelor’s Degree (480 credits) may also be recognised as meeting the minimum entry requirements to a cognate Master’s Degree programme.
  • International Applicants: A SAQA NQF L8 Evaluation Certificate in an appropriate field.
  • Notes: An overall qualification average of at least 65% is required, normally. Applicants are required to have previously completed a research report and/or a research methodology module. Alternatively, they will be required to complete a short learning programme in research methods SRICT020 in addition to their coursework modules.
  •  All applicants who are eligible for admission to the Master of Strategic Information and Communication Technology Management degree are required to successfully complete and present a research proposal and obtain ethics clearance for the research for their mini-dissertation.

Curriculum

Year 1 – Semester 1
  • SITM9511: The purpose of this module is to equip students with strategic ICT management skills. Students will analyze, plan, evaluate and develop strategic ICT business solutions for various organisational contexts.
  • ITSG9511: The purpose of this module is to explore the development and management of ICT governance and security frameworks, and standards and best practices in order to manage organisational risks, ICT security and service continuity.
Year 1 – Semester 2
  • MEMT9512: The purpose of this module is to source, adapt and implement new and emerging technologies to achieve competitive advantages in business. Students will be equipped with the skills to identify and manage shortcomings of new technologies, with the perceived benefits and recommend strategic improvements.
  • DDDM9512: The purpose of this module is to equip students with the skill to manage and analyze data from various sources, to respond to challenges of businesses operating in a fluid environment and define investment priorities to turn technology into businesses’ competitive advantage.
Year 2 – Semester 3 (Year Long Module)
  • MDIS9518: The purpose of this module is to provide students with the competence to carry out supervised research. Students will be equipped with the necessary skills to demonstrate advanced and critical insight into research practice. These skills are necessary to develop and execute an appropriate, valid and reliable research design on an identified information and communication technology problem. Students are required to communicate results and to evaluate their own work and that of others critically and produce strategic insights into the identified research problem. The research results must be of a publishable standard.

Students who complete a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Arts Pathways may pursue further studies such as a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in a related arts or humanities discipline, depending on their area of specialisation and research focus, and several reputable universities offer MPhil in Arts pathways that often lead directly into PhD study. Graduates may work in the public, private, or non-profit sectors, and take on roles like policy making and implementation, management, education and teaching, public health management, or research.

Accreditation

The IIE Master of Strategic Information and Communication Technology Management is accredited by the Higher Education Quality Council (HEQC) of the Council on Higher Education (CHE) and is registered by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) as a 180-credit qualification on level 9 (SAQA ID: 122368).

On-Campus written examination venue information

  • For students based in South Africa, online students may select any campus of Emeris as their Examination Centre.
  • An alternative examination centre is only permissible for students studying abroad and those located in a province of South Africa where there is no Emeris campus. If there is no Emeris campus within reach, an alternative venue will need to be sourced by you. For non-Emeris venues, there is an alternative venue levy per module.

Device and connectivity specifications required for online study

  • Reliable internet connection (we recommend 5-10 GB of data per month and an internet speed of at least 0.15 Mbps). 
  • Desktop PC or laptop with at least an i3 processor and 4GB RAM memory.
  • Windows 8 or MacOS 10.15 (Microsoft Office 365 is available as a free download for IIE Emeris students), and Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge Chromium or Firefox.
  • A working webcam and microphone.
  • An uninterrupted power supply is also highly recommended.
  • Exams are written at an exam centre and in some instances online. These details will be specified in your programme assessment schedule.

Students will also receive access to a Virtual Machine to run required software – this is accessible from your own device as well or can be accessed via the campuses’ lab Computers.
