About this qualification

The IIE Bachelor of Laws or LLB degree, available at Emeris, is a professional qualification that prepares graduates for work and practice in the field of law in South Africa. This degree comprises the legal modules required by graduates to, upon compliance with additional legislative requirements, be admitted as attorneys and advocates of the High Court of South Africa. Graduates with this degree may also follow a variety of alternative careers in law.

Admission requirements

Minimum Admission Requirements:
  • National Senior Certificate (NSC): Bachelor’s Degree pass with 60% for English, 50% for Mathematics or 60% for Mathematical Literacy/Technical Maths; OR
  • National Certificate (Vocational) [NC(V)]: Bachelor’s Degree pass with 60% for English, 50% for Mathematics or 60% for Mathematical Literacy/Technical Mathematics; OR
  • Senior Certificate (SC): Endorsement pass, with 60% for English, 50% for Mathematics or 60% for Mathematical Literacy/Technical Mathematics; OR
  • Senior Certificate (Amended) [SC(a)]: Bachelor pass with 60% for English, 50% for Mathematics or 60% for Mathematical Literacy/Technical Mathematics.
  • To Note: Once you have graduated with the IIE Bachelor of Laws and want to be eligible to practice as an attorney or advocate of the High Court in South Africa, you need to be a citizen or permanent resident of South Africa.
  • International Qualifications: An USAf Exemption Certificate is required and meeting the relevant Maths and English requirements.
  • Alternate Admission: A cognate Higher Certificate OR cognate 240 credit Diploma OR an Advanced Certificate OR 360 credit Diploma or Degree may satisfy the minimum admission requirements to degree studies. If discipline not cognate at least 20% of credits must be academic literacy or numeracy related.

Articulation options

The Bachelor of Laws degree will allow graduates to articulate into programmes at South African public or private higher education institutions, subject to the particular admission requirements of the institution applied to being met.

The IIE Bachelor of Laws degree is specifically intended to provide opportunities for vertical articulation into the IIE Master of Laws (LLM) degree. This degree is also designed to facilitate entry horizontally into appropriate Postgraduate Diplomas and similar vocationally orientated programmes.

It is further envisaged that graduates from The IIE LLB degree may enrol for master’s degrees in non-law disciplines such as business (MBA’s) or in the field of higher education. The degree will also allow graduates to proceed to further study in a postgraduate certificate or diploma or honours degree available at Emeris.

Accreditation

The IIE Bachelor of Laws degree is accredited by the Council on Higher Education (CHE) and is registered by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) as a 530- credit qualification on level 8 (SAQA ID: 101647).

On-Campus written examination venue information

For students based in South Africa, online students may select any campus of Emeris as their Examination Centre.

An alternative examination centre is only permissible for students studying abroad and those located in a province of South Africa where there is no Emeris campus. If there is no Emeris campus within reach, an alternative venue will need to be sourced by you. For non-Emeris venues, there is an alternative venue levy per module.

Device and connectivity specifications required for online study

  • Reliable internet connection (we recommend 5-10 GB of data per month and an internet speed of at least 0.15 Mbps).
  • Desktop PC or laptop with at least an i3 processor and 4GB RAM memory.
  • Windows 8 or macOS 10.15 (Microsoft Office 365 is available as a free download for Emeris students), and Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge Chromium or Firefox.
  • A working webcam and microphone.
  • An uninterrupted power supply is also highly recommended.
  • Exams are written at an exam centre and in some instances online. These details will be specified in your programme assessment schedule.
