About this qualification

Are you passionate about creativity, design, and communication, but not quite sure where to begin? The IIE Higher Certificate in Creative Development is the ideal starting point for students who did not obtain degree admission. This one-year qualification focuses on developing your understanding of creative concept development and critical thinking, essential skills for further study in Communication Design, Experience Design, Interior Design, Game Design and Development, Strategic Brand Communication, Digital Marketing, or Strategic Brand Management.

This certificate offers a strong introduction to the Design and Creative Brand Communication industry, preparing you either to pursue a relevant degree or to enter the industry as an apprentice. You’ll engage with a range of modules designed to build academic and digital literacy, combining theoretical knowledge with practical application.

With tailored electives in the second semester, you can shape your learning journey toward degrees in Design, Brand Communication, or Brand Management. The qualification also provides an introduction to real-world experience, ensuring you develop the creative, conceptual, and critical thinking skills needed to succeed in further studies or entry-level industry roles.

Minimum Admission Requirements

  • A National Senior Certificate (NSC) Higher Certificate pass - with 30% for English; OR
  • A National Certificate (Vocational) NC(V) Higher Certificate pass – with 40% in English; OR
  • A Senior Certificate (SC) (Endorsement - none) with 33.3% in English ; OR
  • A Senior Certificate (Amended) SC(A) Higher Certificate pass with - A minimum of 30% in LOLT on NSC/ SC(a) OR with a min. of 33.3% in SC;
  • For international qualifications: A SAQA Evaluation Certificate with NSC L4 equivalence with at least 30% or equivalent for English

Articulation options

  • Students who intend to use the IIE Higher Certificate in Creative Development (HCCD0501) qualification as a pathway into the IIE Bachelor of Commerce in Strategic Brand Management (BCSM0701) or IIE Bachelor of Commerce in Digital Marketing (BDM0701), must choose Introduction to Quantitative Thinking and Techniques (IQTT5111) to meet the mathematical requirements for entry.
  • Students who intend to use the IIE Higher Certificate in Creative Development (HCCD0501) qualification as a pathway into the IIE Bachelor of Arts in Interior Design (BAID0701) must choose Mathematics Fundamentals for Interior Design (MFID5112) to meet the mathematical requirements for entry.
  • Students who intend to use the IIE Higher Certificate in Creative Development (HCCD0501) qualification as a pathway into the IIE Bachelor of Arts in Strategic Brand Communication (BASB0701) are advised to take Marketing in the 21st Century (MACE5112).
  • Students who wish to articulate into the IIE Bachelor of Communication Design (BCOD0701) or the IIE Bachelor of Experience Design (BEXD0701), are advised to take Motion Design Fundamentals (MDEF5112) OR Web Development (WEDE5020), as it includes foundational training in web development and motion software packages.
  • While the IIE Bachelor of Computer and Information Science in Game Design and Development (BCGD0701) does have a mathematical requirement for entry, it is recommended that students take Motion Design Fundamentals (MDEF5112) OR Web Development (WEDE5020), in addition to a short learning programme (SLP) in mathematics that is in place for first years in Semester 1, that must be completed before progressing to Semester 2.
  • Please note that completing Introduction to Quantitative Techniques (IQTT5111) will not enable students to meet the mathematical requirements for entry into the IIE Game Design and Development degree. To meet the admission requirement, students must successfully complete a short learning programme (SLP) in mathematics during the first semester of the degree before progressing to the second semester.
