Emeris Pietermaritzburg Supports Rise Against Hunger Mandela Campaign
In a determined effort to give back to the community, some of the Emeris Pietermaritzburg students and staff rose to the challenge with the Rise Against Hunger team and packed 8640 meals. Packing the meals was a significant way to mark 67 Minutes of making a difference on Mandela Day and to involve students in giving back. The Rise Against Hunger Africa Mandela Month campaign aimed to pack 3 million nutritious meals in 31 days during July to support vulnerable children and early childhood development centres across South Africa. The nonprofit organisation provides nutritious meal packs to early childhood centres, schools and communities in need.
Mishreya Pillay (second year IIE Bachelor of Arts student and Emeris Cares Chairperson) said: “Knowing that we, the student body, was going to be able to provide a meal for underprivileged children motivated us to keep going and we were able to pack the 8640 meals for the Rise Against Hunger Mandela Month campaign”.
“Emeris Pietermaritzburg packed 40 boxes which means 8640 meals will be provided to 38 children for a whole year. The meals packed contributed to our national target of 3 million meals for our Mandela Month campaign. The continued support is vital to us giving back to the communities” added Yolanda Makhanya (KwaZulu-Natal Branch Manager Rise Against Hunger).
Emeris strives to encourage and develop its students to become citizens of change who can make meaningful contributions to society through community engagement.
