Emeris Umhlanga Gaming Event
Want to test your gaming skills and win some extra pocket money these school holidays? Then “AVOID: Score Attack!” is worth a shot. The competitive high score gaming event will take place at The Vega School at Emeris uMhlanga on 1 April from 9am to 3pm. Entry is free with over R5 000 in cash prizes and The Big Bang Shop vouchers up for grabs
Open to high school learners and Emeris students, the event will form part of Emeris Sports Week and will give prospective students a chance to experience the Game Design and Development environment, connect with the campus community and explore opportunities in the field.
Hosted by Emeris and Donderbos Games, and sponsored by The Big Bang Shop, the event will centre around AVOID, a commercially released Indie game developed by Henk Scheepers (Game Design and Development Lecturer at The Vega School at Emeris uMhlanga).
"AVOID was developed in conjunction with my teaching practice, so it's exciting to see it used as a platform for students and prospective students to experience game development and esports in the same space," said Scheepers.
Participants will compete in a high score format. During the qualifier round, they will have five minutes to achieve their best score, with the top ten advancing to the final.
In the final round, competitors will have ten minutes to secure the highest score, with final rankings based on each player’s top performance.
According to Scheepers, the global video game industry is now valued at over $180 billion, with South Africa’s game development sector continuing to expand through a growing network of studios and creatives.
"Events like "AVOID: Score Attack!" offer a practical way for aspiring developers and gamers to engage with the industry while experiencing the competitive side of gaming," he added.
