A bright start in education: Mckayler’s journey from student to teacher

For Mckayler Lorimer, becoming a teacher has always been more than a career choice — it’s been a calling. Today, as a Grade R teacher at Irene Primary School and an alumna of the IIE Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase Teaching, Mckayler is living her dream of shaping young learners’ futures.

Despite navigating the challenges of dyslexia, Mckayler completed her degree with distinction. Her resilience and passion for education continue to inspire both her colleagues and her learners.

“I became a teacher to contribute to the learning environment,” she explains. “Each learner is unique, with their own strengths. My goal is to grow those strengths and be a leader in the classroom, not just a teacher. I want every child to feel seen, valued and supported.”

Turning passion into practice

Since schools reopened in January 2024, Mckayler has brought creativity, energy, and compassion into her Grade R classroom. Her teaching style combines modern methodologies with hands-on learning, creating a space where students are excited to engage every day.

“The practical knowledge I gained during my studies has been invaluable,” says Mckayler. “My very first day in the classroom was overwhelming, but also deeply rewarding. Seeing the joy on my learners’ faces confirmed why teaching is one of the most fulfilling professions. My studies gave me the tools, and now I get to bring them to life.”
